MOQ Transport Draft Reaches Version 08: What Changed

The IETF MOQ Working Group has published draft-ietf-moq-transport-08, marking another significant milestone in the standardization of Media over QUIC. This revision introduces several important changes that reflect the working group's ongoing refinement of the protocol.
Key Changes
Simplified Subscription Model
The subscription model has been streamlined in this revision. The SUBSCRIBE message now uses a more compact encoding, and the concept of "subscription filters" has been refined to better support common use cases like subscribing to the latest group or a specific range of groups.
Object Header Consolidation
Previous drafts had multiple object header formats. Draft 08 consolidates these into a cleaner set of options:
- OBJECT_STREAM: A single object per QUIC stream
- OBJECT_DATAGRAM: A single object per QUIC datagram
- STREAM_HEADER_TRACK: Multiple objects from one track on a single stream
- STREAM_HEADER_SUBGROUP: Objects from a subgroup sharing a stream
Improved Error Handling
Error codes have been reorganized and expanded. The new error taxonomy makes it easier for implementations to provide meaningful feedback when subscriptions fail or connections encounter issues.
Impact on Implementations
Existing implementations like moq-rs and moqtransport will need updates to conform to the new wire format. The changes are not backwards-compatible, which is expected at this stage of standardization.
